Title: SIDHE

Notes: An original carved woodblock in the Art Nouveau style, probably from Ireland or Scotland, given the subject.
Known as “The People of the Mounds”, Sidhe were believed by people living in rural Ireland and Scotland to have supernatural powers, giving them the ability to move quickly through the air and change their shape at will. The Irish also believed that they were the descendants of the old agricultural gods of the Earth who controlled the ripening of the crops and the milk yields of the cattle, so offerings of milk and butter had to be given to them regularly.
A feature of the Sidhe was that they were considered to have distinct tribes, ruled over by fairy kings and queens, each with a distinct realm.
This social order of the Sidhe corresponds to the old aristocracy of ancient Irish families, which is in itself a reflection of the ancient Celtic caste system.
Condition: Overall good condition, with a few nicks to the surface. Time has dried out the wood and the block is slightly curved.
