“Retreating German officer and men”

A scathing caricature of a fearful German officer with ragged uniform and broken sword beating a hasty retreat from the battle. A fine example of French graphic artists' use of posters to contribute to the war effort. The posters inspired both the soldiers and the populace and became a highly effective weapon on the home front and the battlefield.
