Notes: Rothenstein was the son of the celebrated artist Sir William Rothenstein. He studied at the Central School of Art from 1924 to 1927. He lived in Essex from 1940, where he became influenced by the Neo-Romantic movement which was concerned with evoking emotion in landscape imagery.
This lithograph is a fine example of Rothenstein’s work and evokes a sense of affection and nostalgia for the simple but hard work of timber felling and cutting in Essex using steam traction engines.
The publishers, The Baynard Press. commissioned artists to produce a series of lithographs to mark the post-war exuberance and optimism that culminated in the Festival of Britain. The spirit which pervades the prints is of quiet celebration: they picture a world reassuring in its familiarities; a world of everyday work. The best of the prints present images of perennial rural land small-town life, and Rothenstein, with his pared-down naïve style, is celebrated for his ability to convey these values.
Represented in numerous major galleries, including London’s Tate Gallery which has this particular work in its collection. He was elected RA in 1983.
