Feasts of the Angels and the Holy Spirit

Printed c. 1525, Belgium

Recto:   Text in Latin printed in red and black in two sizes of a gothic typeface on watermarked, laid paper.  Three two-line and numerous one-line initials printed in red.  Rubrics in red.  A large (50x45mm) historiated woodcut initial ‘B’ enclosing an image of five angels at prayer. The initial is formed of acanthus leaves and two comical faces, one wearing a hat. The initial is coloured by hand; the subdued palette and sketchily applied brushwork suggest contemporary colouring.

Verso:   As Recto with another hand coloured woodcut initial ‘D’  depicting a group of saints gathered around the Virgin and the Holy Spirit above them.

Printer:   Not known, Belgium (Antwerp?)

Date: c. 1525.

Content: The text beginning at the woodcut  initial ‘B’ is the introit antiphon::

Benedicite domino omnes angeli ejus potentes virtute qui facitis verbum ejus

Bless the Lord all ye his angels, mighty in strength, who do his bidding.

Condition: The leaf is in fine condition, expertly printed and unblemished apart from a few wormholes in the inner margin.  Original margins and a clear watermark in the bottom margin..  Archivally mounted.  Guaranteed original.

Size: Leaf: 310x210 mm.  Please note that shipping is invoiced separately.
