Incunable “Biblia Latina” leaf,1487-88


Epistle of Paul to Philemon

                  Delicately illuminated initials added by hand after printing


Verso:  Two columns of Latin text printed in two sizes in black in a gothic font on laid rag paper.  Four splendid coloured initials, alternating in blue and red, with delicate internal and external penwork. 


Recto:  As Verso, with two further coloured initials.

Content:  The leaf includes all of the Epistle of Paul to Philemon and the beginning of the Epistle of Paul to the Hebrews. The large illuminated initial ‘P’ begins Philemon:  Paulus vinctus Christi Jesu, et Timotheus frater, Philemoni dilecto, et adjutori nostro, et Appiæ sorori carissimæ, et Archippo commilitoni nostro, et ecclesiæ, quæ in domo tua est.  Gratia vobis, et pax a Deo Patre nostro, et Domino Jesu Christo. (Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy, who is their brother, to the well beloved Philemon, who shares our labours, and to all the church that is in his household, to our dear sister Appia, Archippus, who fights the same battle with ourselves, and the rest; Grace and peace be yours from God, our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ).


Condition:  This leaf is in very good/excellent condition, sharply printed and with original margins all round.   The coloured initials remain bright and unfaded.  Very slight edge browning. The leaf is unconditionally guaranteed genuine.
