Fine initial. Liturgical chant leaf, c. 1525


“Take the Child and his Mother and go into the land of Judah”



Verso: Five lines of music written on parchment in square & diamond shaped neumes on red-ruled five-line staves with a key signature. Rubrics in red. The accompanying text is written in Latin in a gothic rotunda bookhand.  One very fine illuminated initial “T” in blue, with extensive decorative red penwork,  See images below


Recto:  As Verso with a page number in red at the top -  lix (59). 


Origin:  Probably Spain


Date:  c. 1525


Content:  The leaf contains part of the chant sung at communion for the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.   The illuminated initial “T” begins the chant which is taken from Matthew 2. 20:  Tolle puerum, et Matrem ejus, et vade in terram iuda: defuncti sunt enim, qui quaerebant animam pueri.

(Take the Child and His Mother, and go into the land of Judah: for they are dead who sought the life of the Child.)


Condition:  The leaf is in good condition with only the expected marking from page-turning, browning and surface dirt. There is a slight loss of parchment in the left margin with an old sewn repair,  (see detail photo) but it is masked off by the mat. The illuminated initial is in fine condition.  It is unconditionally guaranteed genuine.
