The Wisdom of Solomon. Bible leaf, c. 1240, Paris

Verso:   Ruled in red with text written on fine vellum in Latin in an extraordinarily precise gothic minuscule script in two columns of 45 lines. The text is written in remarkably tiny and well formed letters, so small that there are four lines of text to the centimetre, or eleven lines to the inch.  The heading “SA” in Lombard style red & blue illuminated initials is half of the bifolium heading of “SAPIENTIAE”  (Book of Wisdom).  Lombard style illuminated initials in red and blue also indicate the beginning of chapters and the chapter numbers. Some scholars’ notations in the margins.

Recto:   As Verso.

Origin:  Paris, France

Date:  c. 1240

Content:  The leaf contains sections of Chapters 6 & 9 and all of Chapters 7 & 8 of The Book of Wisdom or the Wisdom of Solomon. Chapter 8 begins in the fifth line from the top of the left column: Attingit ergo a fine usque ad finem fortiter, et disponit omnia suaviter. Hanc amavi, et exquisivi a iuventute mea, et quæsivi sponsam mihi eam assumere, et amator factus sum formæ illius.  ( Thus, she reaches mightily from one end all the way to the other, and she orders all things sweetly. I have loved her and searched for her from my youth, and have asked to take her to me as my spouse, and I became a lover of her beauty.)

Condition:  This leaf is in excellent condition, particularly considering its age of well over 750 years.  There is the expected slight browning at the outer margins, but the text and illuminations are near perfect.  The leaf is unconditionally guaranteed genuine.

Notes:  The Liber Sapientiae is considered scripture in the Catholic Church but Protestants generally consider it to be non-canonical (apocryphal), though still of spiritual value. It is one of the seven Sapiential or wisdom books included with the Septuagint, along with Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon (Song of Songs), and Sirach..
