Bible leaf, c. 1225, Book of the Prophet Amos

From an early manuscript Parisian “Pocket Bible”.

Recto:   Ruled in red with text written on fine vellum in Latin in an extraordinarily precise gothic minuscule script in two columns of 45 lines. The text is written in remarkably tiny and well formed letters, so small that there are four lines of text to the centimetre, or eleven lines to the inch.  The heading “OS” in Lombard style red & blue illuminated initials is the second half of the bifolium heading “AMOS”.  Lombard style illuminated initials in red and blue also indicate the beginning of chapters and the chapter numbers.  A few cryptic scholar’s notations in a contemporary hand in the margins.  See images below

Verso:   As Recto.

Origin:  Paris, France

Date:   Early part of the 13th century, c.1225

Content:  The leaf contains all of Chapters 6,7 & 8, with sections of Chapters 5 & 9 of the Book of the Prophet Amos. The illuminated initial “H” begins Chapter 7: Haec ostendit mihi dominus deus, et ecce factor locustae in principio germanium serotini imbris. et ecce serotinus post tonsionem regis.  (Thus hath the Lord God showed unto me, and behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and lo, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings.)

Condition:  This leaf is in very good/excellent condition, particularly considering its age of almost 800 years.  There is very slight browning in the margins, but the text and illuminations are near perfect. The leaf is unconditionally guaranteed genuine.

Notes:  The production of small format bibles flourished in Paris in the 13th century. Written on extremely thin parchment in an extraordinarily tiny script, these codices were highly portable.  The parent book of this leaf was a high quality Bible of the Crusades period, used in the study of theology or preaching around the medieval countryside.  It may have been first owned by a Dominican priest from an academic milieu, as wealthy Flemish Dominicans studied at the Parisian college of Saint-Jacques.

Size:  Size of leaf: approx. 160x110 mm. Text and illuminated area : approx.  120x70 mm.  Mat size: approx. 310x255 mm.  Presented in a museum quality mat, ready to frame.  Insured post within Australia: $22.50.  Overseas, ask for quote.
